About us

Built in Kharkiv.
Built to last.

Ironwood Fitness is not a franchise or a commercial chain. It is a specialist training studio founded by coaches who refused to settle for mediocre results — for themselves or their members.

Our story

From a single barbell to a full coaching team

Ironwood Fitness opened its doors in Kharkiv in 2015, founded by head coach Mykola Savchenko and strength specialist Kateryna Bondar. Both had grown frustrated working in large commercial gyms where members were left to train alone with little guidance and slower results. They wanted something different: a studio where every member had a coach, every programme was individual, and every result was documented and celebrated.

Starting with a compact facility in Saltivka and a team of four, Ironwood grew steadily through word of mouth. By 2019 the studio had relocated to a larger space on Akademika Pavlova Street and expanded the coaching team to twelve specialists covering strength, metabolic conditioning, mobility and sport-specific performance.

Through a challenging period for Ukraine and for Kharkiv specifically, Ironwood has remained open, adapted its schedules and stood beside its community. That resilience is reflected in a membership retention rate that speaks for itself.

What we stand for

Four principles we never compromise on

Expertise above all

Every Ironwood coach is certified, continuously educated and held to a coaching standard that goes far beyond what most gyms require. We would rather have fewer coaches than hire someone who doesn't meet the bar.

Individual attention

Generic programmes produce generic results. We build every plan around the individual: their history, their body, their lifestyle and their goals. One size fits none here.

Honest progression

We set realistic timelines, track real metrics and give honest feedback. We celebrate progress, address plateaus and never oversell a timeline just to close a membership.

Community over competition

Ironwood members push each other. Whether you are here for weight loss, performance or general health, you belong here equally. Encouragement is part of the culture — not an extra.

Evidence before trends

We coach from current sports science, not whatever is going viral. When the research moves, our methods move with it — and we are happy to explain the reasoning behind your programme.

Safety as the foundation

Loading earns its place only after movement is sound. Structured warm-ups, mobility and planned recovery keep our members training consistently and out of the physio's office.

Our mission

To make evidence-based training accessible to every person in Kharkiv who is serious about change

We exist to close the gap between what people want from their body and what they actually achieve in the gym. That means expert coaching, honest communication and programmes grounded in exercise science — not trends.

Our journey

Milestones 2015 – 2026

2015
Ironwood Fitness opens in Saltivka
Mykola Savchenko and Kateryna Bondar launch the studio with four coaches, 120 sq m of training space, and a clear philosophy: every member deserves a real programme and a real coach. The first cohort of 38 members signs up within the first two weeks.
2017
Nutrition coaching programme launched
Oksana Sydorenko joins as the studio's first Precision Nutrition-certified coach. Ironwood becomes one of the first studios in Kharkiv to bundle evidence-based nutritional planning into personal training packages at no extra cost.
2018
500 members coached milestone
Three years after opening, Ironwood has coached 500 unique members. Internal data shows a 91% goal-achievement rate for members completing a full 12-week programme — a benchmark the studio continues to maintain.
2019
Relocation to Akademika Pavlova Street
Demand outgrows the original space. The studio relocates to a purpose-fitted 360 sq m facility on Akademika Pavlova Street, expanding from four to eight group coaching lanes and adding a dedicated mobility and recovery zone. Coaching team grows to ten.
2020
Online coaching programme introduced
In response to external disruption, Ironwood builds out a full remote coaching infrastructure: app-based programme delivery, video form review, and weekly video check-ins. The online programme quickly attracts members who have relocated internationally and want to continue with their coach.
2022 – 2023
Staying open for Kharkiv
During the most difficult period for the city, Ironwood remains operational with adapted timetables. Members train under challenging conditions. The coaching team offers sliding-scale memberships and free online access for members who evacuate. Retention through this period: 71% — a statistic the team is proud of.
2024
Coaching team reaches twelve specialists
Dmytro Petrenko and three additional coaches join, rounding out the team to twelve. New specialisations added include sport-specific performance for combat athletes and a dedicated senior fitness programme for members 50+. Total members coached passes 1,100.
2025 – 2026
1,200+ members & extended evening hours
Ironwood marks its 1,200th coached member in spring 2025 and introduces extended evening group classes until 21:30 in response to member demand. Planning for a second Kharkiv location is underway, with a target opening date in the second half of 2026.
Our coaches

Twelve coaches. One standard.

The Ironwood team comprises twelve certified coaches spanning strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, mobility therapy and competitive powerlifting. Every coach has been with the studio for a minimum of two years — you will not be assigned to someone new mid-programme.
